Windows 2.x is the second major version of Microsoft Windows, first released as Windows 2.0 in 1987. It adds general support for overlapping windows, as opposed to Windows 1.0x which could only overlap dialog boxes while main windows were tiled.
Windows 2.x has two versions, the original version that runs purely in real mode (later rebranded as Windows/286), and Windows/386, which takes advantage of the processor's virtual 8086 mode to pre-emptively multitask MS-DOS applications.
