Mac OS X
macOS, formerly known as Mac OS X is a line of operating systems released by Apple, starting with Mac OS X 10.0 on March 24, 2001. It is the successor to Mac OS 9 and the classic Mac OS family. In 2011, Apple shortened the name of Mac OS X to "OS X", and further renamed to “macOS” in 2016 to align with the branding of Apple’s other operating system lines, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS.
Mac OS X was promoted by Apple as a significant upgrade from its predecessors, introducing features such as Spotlight search, Quick Look, and an improved user interface.
Mac OS X 10.0 until OS X 10.8 were named after big cat species, which later changed with the release of OS X Mavericks, when Apple switched into naming the releases after locations in California.
