Yū Madobe (Japanese: 窓辺ゆう, Madobe Yū) and Ai Madobe (Japanese: 窓辺あい, Madobe Ai) are moe characters representing Windows 8 and 8.1[1].
History
Their first formal mention was in an Akiba-PC article[2] from October 11 2012, announcing the Windows 8 Pro DSP Release Commemorative Packs by Windows Navi+ featuring the sisters, that came with some copies of Windows 8 during its launch in Japan in 2012. However, the Yū's silhouette already appears in a video[3] from April 25 2012 that features Claudia Madobe.
This fact and early artworks suggest that Yū was intended to be the only representative of Windows 8, and it was then only decided later to make another character.

Notes and references
- ↑ The reason why two characters were created is unclear. However, it is a common misconception that one would have been made to represent 8 and the other 8.1, which cannot be true as both debuted at a time no one could have guessed the release of 8.1. Another common theory that one would represent 8 and the other RT is unlikely as both were used to promote Windows 8 Pro in the Commemorative Packs. But since they continued to be used to promote Windows 8.1, we can consider that they represent 8 and 8.1 as a whole.
